Designing an organization structure that supports growth

DLN Consulting Group · 6 min read

Organization structures tend to grow by addition. A new manager here, a new team there, until reporting lines no longer match how decisions are made. When that happens, work slows down, accountability becomes unclear, and good people get frustrated.

Signs your structure needs attention

  • Decisions regularly escalate to senior leaders that should be made lower down.
  • Teams duplicate work or compete for the same resources.
  • Managers have too many or too few direct reports.
  • New hires are unsure who they really report to or who approves their work.

Start with strategy, not boxes

Before drawing a new chart, be clear about what the organization must do well over the next few years. A business growing through new products needs a different structure from one focused on cost and consistency.

Design around key decisions

Identify the decisions that matter most, such as pricing, hiring, and investment, and decide who should own each one. Structure should make those decisions easier, not harder.

Consider the trade-offs

Every structure has strengths and weaknesses. Organizing by function builds expertise; organizing by product or region brings teams closer to customers. Most organizations use a mix. The goal is to choose the trade-offs deliberately.

Plan the transition carefully

People experience a reorganization through what changes for them: their manager, their role, their team. Clear communication, defined roles, and a realistic timeline matter as much as the design itself.
